| Summary | Where Cicero stores your projects and settings on your computer. |
Cicero keeps everything on your computer. Nothing is uploaded, and there’s no online copy. That means your work is private, and it also means you hold the only copy until you make a backup.
Your projects
Section titled “Your projects”Each project is one self-contained folder. By default it’s created here:
C:\Users\<you>\Documents\Cicero Projects\<project-name>
/Users/<you>/Documents/Cicero Projects/<project-name> (coming soon)
If you chose a different Save Location when you created the project, it’s there instead. To find it, right-click the project’s card in the Project Hub → Edit → look at Save Location.
Inside the folder:
Directorymy-novel/ - project.db everything you wrote: sheets, lore, relations, comments, notes - assets/ your banner, portraits, and sheet images
- …
The folder is the project. Copy it, and you’ve copied everything.
Cicero’s own settings
Section titled “Cicero’s own settings”Cicero also keeps a small list of your projects and your app settings (theme, zoom, default save location, backup reminders) in a separate system folder:
C:\Users\<you>\AppData\Roaming\Cicero
/Users/<you>/Library/Application Support/Cicero (coming soon)
This folder holds no writing. If it’s ever lost or reset, your projects are still safe in their own folders. Use Open Project to add them back. See Open an Existing Project Folder.
Keep projects out of live cloud-sync folders
Section titled “Keep projects out of live cloud-sync folders”Store your project folders locally, for example in Documents. Cloud-sync apps (OneDrive, Dropbox, Google Drive) can lock or rewrite files while Cicero is saving, which can cause save errors.
If you want an off-computer copy, put your backups in a synced folder. See Back Up a Project.
Moving to a new computer
Section titled “Moving to a new computer”Copy each project folder to the new computer, install Cicero there, and use Open Project on each folder. See Move Cicero to a New Computer.
